Product Review: Spectrex 40/40i Accessories

Last month I described the Spectrex Model 40/40i IR3 flame detector. This month I will describe the accessories for this unit.

The accessories generally fit into two categories:

  • Installation accessories
  • Calibration accessories.

For installation there are two different type of mounts, tilt or swivel. Each of these can be used on either a flat surface like a wall or they can be used on a pipe by using U-bolts. There are also multiple types of rain covers. These keep water from the unit so it can properly do its job. There are also “air shields” that keep a constant low flow of compressed air through them. This keeps dust and particles from the lens area of the detector, thus allowing it to function in very dusty and dirty environments.

For calibration tools there are basically 2 and one of them might be considered an installation tool. The tool that can go into either category is a detection cone tool. This device mounts to the front of the detector and holds two laser pointers: one on-axis so you can see the “ideal” location, and one on a 45 degree offset. This second one establishes the cone that the unit cal see. This second laser pointer can rotate about the main axis, allowing the technician setting up the detector so “see” the area the detector will see.

The final calibration tool is a flame simulator. With this tool you can simulate a flame from up to 30 feet away. This simulator generates a IR signal that the detector will see as a fire. This is handy to have for occasional safety check of your detectors, providing you have a way to tell your system that this is a test only, not a real fire.

The Spectrex line of flame detectors and accessories are robust, accurate, and well thought-out from both an installation and a calibration viewpoint.
